AAII’s relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO) has resulted in one of AAII’s Shifa-al-Asqam Socio-Medical Center’s most successful initiatives: a Vaccination Program against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Whooping Cough, Polio, Tetanus, Yellow Fever and Hepatitis. In addition to the vaccines, WHO provides medicine to support AAII’s on-going efforts to reduce maternal and child death.

AAII’s collaboration with the St. Christopher College Medical School in establishing a medical school in the El Hajj Ibrahim Niass University in Dakar, Senegal has received WHO certification for physicians graduating from the program.

In November, 2006, at the request of the World Health Organization, the President of Nigeria and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, AAII’s Founder and Chairman embarked on a campaign to sensitize Islamic leaders and influential individuals in Northern Nigeria to the importance of immunization to stop the spread of Polio, to obtain their commitments to convey the message to their people that the Polio vaccine is safe and that Muslim children must be protected against the disease. Through visits to ten northern Nigerian states and effective utilization of both broadcast and print media, AAII’s Founder and Chairman explained the dangers of Polio, the safety of the vaccine to prevent it and the obligation of parents to protect their children. In collaboration with WHO, massive immunizations sessions were organized in schools with populations of more than a thousand students. WHO officials in Nigeria reported, “Shaykh Hassan Cisse has accomplished in three weeks what we were unable to do ourselves in six years.”
